WALL-E Movie Study

Seven hundred years in the future the earth has been abandoned by all humans and left in the care of a Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class (WALL-E). After all this time of doing exactly what he was MADE to do, WALL-E discovers what he was MEANT to do.


Option 1: What Was This?

Send your group into the church building and have them return with an object they found. Have them explain “what this was” as if they were a team of archeologists from the far future. The only rule is that can't explain what it REALLY was—they must come up with something totally wrong.

Option 2: WALL-E Names

The robots in WALL-E have unique names.

Some of the names are linked to the robots function and others are anagrams (EVE: Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator). Have your students create a robot name from the letters of their first or last name. (If you think they will be nice about it, put the names in a hat and have the students draw a name out and create a robot name for each other.)

Option 3: IN A CUP!

Apparently in the future we'll be too fat and lethargic to even chew our food. Everyone has his or her meals “in a cup.” Drive through a few fast food places and purchase meals (burger, fries, shake or sub sandwich and a Dew), put these in a blender and see if any of your youth will give the food of the future a try.

Option 4: Bumper Stickers

Purchase bumper sticker paper from your local craft store or office supply center. (You can also use plain copy paper.) Have your students read the scripture from Galatians 6 and imagine they are creating a bumper sticker that will go on WALL-E's back. They must find the meaning of the verse (as it applies to WALL-E) and write it in as few words as possible.

Bonus Idea:

Prior to the movie, visit your local gardening store and purchase small seedlings in tiny cups. Give these out to your students during the closing prayer.

Other Snack Ideas:

  • Use jello-jigglers cut into shapes and build your own WALL-E type robots.
  • Twinkies—each one containing a chocolate roach. (Roach molds are available at many craft or confectionary stores. Or you can make a roach out of a section of Hershey bar with licorice antenna.)


The voice of the ship's computer is done by Sigourney Weaver, who survived multiple spaceship adventures in the ALIEN series.

Programming Note:

Begin and end this session with the reading from Genesis. If you have a student who can copy WALL-E's voice, allow them to read it at the beginning. Close the lesson with the same reading in a human voice.

Discussion Questions:

The spaceship where WALL-E is taken is called the Axiom. By definition an “axiom” is a proposition that cannot be proved or demonstrated but is true nonetheless—a self-evident truth.

Where have you heard about self-evident truths? What are they?

Can you think of any more?

What significance does this name have on the movie?

In Greek it is a truth that does not need proving?

Can we prove God exists? If we can, what is the need for faith?

Wall-E's truck (seems a lot like Ariel's grotto, doesn't it?) It's a collection of things that have special meaning to WALL-E. List five things you own that would have no meaning whatsoever to anyone else who happened upon them.

When does WALL-E finally begin to become who he truly is?

Read the scripture verse from Hebrews. Look at each verse individually. Where do you find an example of this in the movie?

Re-write the parable of the wise man/foolish man from Matthew 7 and make it about WALL-E.

When Eve first shows up she is fulfilling her “directive.” What happens as soon as the ship is out of sight? How are she and WALL-E alike in this manner? How are EVE and WALL-E similar to the people onboard the Axiom?

What is the “directive” you have been given? (Example. Study hard. Get good grades. Go to college. Get married. Have children. Grow old. Die.) Write down the “directive” you hear over and over until it can be played back in your head like a recording.

Read Romans 12:2: Is this a directive?

Jesus said: “Love God. Love Each other.” Does Jesus give directives? How is this different?

WALL-E spends his days doing the same thing over and over and over and then at night he seems to dream of being something else. It is only when his taken by force out of his routine that he becomes what he wants and it doesn't happen without pain. When was the last time you had a good-old-fashioned-dope-slap that brought you out of your routine?

Read the verse from 1 Timothy. When does WALL-E's life really take off?

Philosopher Michael Esselstein said, “You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Christ figure.” Who is the Christ figure in this movie? Give an example.

Notice in the movie that the “defective” robots treat WALL-E like he his some sort of Messiah. They are not healed of their defective-ness. They are loved, defects and all.

Read Psalm 139. Which lines jump out at you? Which ones hit home as something that you need to remember?

Promotional material for the movie said that WALL-E spent all those years doing what he was MADE to do and now he discovers what he was MEANT to do. What is the difference? What do you think you were MADE and MEANT to do?

Do you think God has a plan for everyone? Even those who don't believe he exists?

God called certain people to specific tasks. (Judges 13:3-5, David 1 Samuel 16:12-13, Paul Galatians 1:15-16) How do you know what God may be calling you to do?

Read 1 Corinthians 10:31. Paul tells us that if we do EVERYTHING for God's glory that God's message to us will become more clear.

What is really keeping the people on the Spaceship Axiom?

God reserves some of his harshest words for people who have become complacent.

Isaiah 329-20, Joel 1:1-20, Malachi 2:1-12 all are condemnations through the prophets of people who have become complacent in their faith. (Although some of the condemnations refer to the women of Jerusalem they are not specific to that gender.)

How many comparisons can you make to the people in aboard the Axiom to our culture?

The Captain shouts, “I don't want to survive! I want to live!” What does it usually take for you to get off your butt and do something?

What do you think it will take for us a species to do something about the environment so we don't become like the earth as depicted in the movie?

Read Revelations 3:16- God talks about the importance of not being lukewarm about life. It's okay to be hot or cold but not lukewarm. Give some examples of how the “guests” aboard the Axiom are lukewarm. Give some examples of how we can be lukewarm as a church.

Closing Prayer:

End the Bible Study with the reading from Genesis 1. Imagine that these words are fresh and new and you are hearing them for the first time after living your entire life on a spaceship.
